Select a policy issue or program that you consider to be especially important for older adults (e.g. controlling the cost of Medicare, providing more assistance for in-home care, for or against raising the age of Social Security eligibility , applying the Social Security tax to
all wage and salary income). Briefly describe the issue, current policies and legislation, and any proposed changes. Explain your position regarding the policy or program. Then summarize the position that one of your legislative members has taken about the issue, policy, or program. If, after researching, you cannot find your legislator’s position, contact your legislator’s office and ask what his/her position

Medicare
adversely covers healthcare costs for adults 65 years and older and people with disabilities regardless of their status quo and income (Pinheiro et al.,2020). As we age we will typically require more care, which requires more money. The issue is the large amounts of money required for treatment. This dilemma has made many aged people postpone healthcare or choose to delay care. This can lead to health conditions worsening since the diagnoses are delayed. Therefore it is no secret that reducing the costs from Medicare will prevent the older population from skipping healthcare due to the high costs. Medicare coverage is extremely important to the aged because of their poor incomes and fewer assets from which they can draw finances. The aged vulnerability makes them prone to chronic illnesses; therefore, this policy complements them
through cost-sharing, alleviating the effects and burdens of high healthcare costs. According to one of the legislative members, New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera, Medicare should not leave anyone outside the care coverage; it also needs to include every undocumented person. Lack of treatment leads to high mortality rates due to lack of healthcare. The Bill of legislation was just signed and not really implemented; therefore, cases of high costs, high premiums, and delayed care lead to the aged people in New York living in debt, suffering from illnesses, disabilities, and preventable deaths.

Improving
access to mental health and substance use care for older adults is important.
The lack of access to Medicare providers and needed services is causing a
mental health crisis among older Americans. A significant increase in
anxiety and depression disorders among older adults has been attributed to
uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Getting physically
separated and quarantined has led to feelings of loneliness, agitation, and
withdrawal in older adults and their caregivers. It is estimated that millions
of seniors with mental and/or substance use disorders go undiagnosed because
less than 50% receive treatment, according to the National Academy of Medicine
and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (Miller,
2022).
As
an organization dedicated to those with mental health conditions and promoting
their interests, the National Coalition on Mental Health and Aging addresses
the issues older adults face in securing mental health care services (Miller,
2022). There are several critical strategies the Coalition believes
should be pursued to address the current and future shortfall in provider
training in geriatrics and mental health. Among them are exploring incentive
programs, training long-term care nurses and other allied professionals to
address behavioral symptoms associated with dementia and psychiatric disorders,
and increasing the number of mental health providers with geriatric
training (Miller, 2022). Additionally, the Coalition suggests reforming
Medicare and Medicaid to facilitate behavioral health and primary care
integration among aging Americans, in addition to supporting interdisciplinary
care coordination and treatment teams (Miller, 2022).
On July 21,
2022, a Suffolk County board meeting held by Legislator Leslie Kennedy
discussed an Advisory Board for Mental and Physical Health Established to
continuously examine mental and physical health issues, related activities,
programs, and policies, to monitor regional progress and make recommendations
on specific proposals to promote the mental health of all residents and their
families with a focus on providing hope, recovery, and empowerment; and further
be constituted. The Legislators also discussed amending the 2022 Adopted
Operating Budget to accept and appropriate $909,695 in additional 100% State
Aid from the New York State Office of Mental Health (NYS OMH) to various
contract agencies for a Cost-Of-Living Adjustment (COLA) (Suffolk County
